MADE in SC PIs and participants have been very busy publishing their research – and they are gaining recognition for their work. Recently, MADE in SC Thrust 3 participant Dr. Konstantin (Kostya) Kornev’s publication in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, entitled, “Self-assembly of the butterfly proboscis: the role of capillary forces” was featured in Nature under the title of “Why spit is key to building a butterfly.”

New Website Features


The SC EPSCoR website is being updated with several new features. One of these features is the PI Info menu item which contains a collection of information for principal investigators. This includes:

Portal Login: This provides access to the SC EPSCoR Portal that allows any faculty member to submit proposals in response to solicitations such as GEAR, SAN, etc. Those who are not registered should follow the instructions online for registration. The Portal also has a component for faculty who are participants of a project to contribute information to the project’s research report. A new addition to the Portal is for external proposal reviewers.

Domestic Travel Policy: This explains the travel policy for SC EPSCoR-funded projects.

Acknowledgement of NSF Support: All products resulting from the MADE in SC project must acknowledge NSF support. This link provides the text for the acknowledgment.

Procedure for Requesting Budget Revisions (MADE in SC-funded projects): This procedure must be used for requesting changes to the approved budget of any award or subaward made by the SC EPSCoR Program.

GEAR

Due Mon, Oct 8, 5 pm
GEAR encourages faculty researchers at SC's CRUs to compete for research funding to support MADE in SC research clusters. Proposals must be a collaboration between two investigators from Clemson, MUSC, and/or USC Columbia and, preferably, between a senior faculty and a junior faculty member. 

Max Funding Amount Per Project: $60,000

Award Duration: 12 months

Proposals may be submitted by a PI from Clemson, MUSC, or USC Columbia. Current GEAR awardees are not eligible to apply in this funding cycle.

GEAR CRP

Due Mon, Oct 8, 5 pm
GEAR CRP encourages faculty researchers at SC CRUs and PUIs to build collaborative academic research teams that will compete for research funding related to MADE in SC. Proposals must include two investigators with a senior CRU faculty and a PUI junior faculty. See website for full eligibility description.

Max Funding Amount Per Project: $60,000

Award Duration: 12 months

Faculty members from any SC college or university may serve as a PI. Current GEAR CRP Awardees are not eligible for this funding cycle.

NSF: Track-2

Due TO NSF Mon, Nov 26
NSF EPSCoR RII Track-2 FY19 topic: “Harnessing the Data Revolution to solve problems of national importance.” Only one proposal (as Lead PI) per institution is allowed. Letter of Intent (LOI) is due to NSF by Mon, Nov 26. NSF limits a researcher to be the PI or Co-PI on one Track-2 grant

All SC institutions are encouraged to conduct an internal selection process to identify the most competitive research idea from their faculty and submit a LOI to NSF. Each institution that submits a LOI to NSF can receive SC EPSCoR proposal development funds by emailing us by Tues, Nov 27

Research Focus On...

2018 NSF EPSCoR RII Track-2 Recipients

SC EPSCoR/IDeA Program is pleased to announce that two South Carolina researchers have received funding as part of a NSF EPSCoR RII Track-2 team with a lead principal investigator from another NSF jurisdiction. Clemson University’s Christopher McMahan and Rajandeep Sekton are co-PIs on the Track-2 award entitled, “A Multiscale, Multiphysics Modeling Framework for Genome-to Phenome Mapping via Intermediate Phenotypes.” Lead PI on the award is Dr. Seth DeBolt, Department of Horticulture, University of Kentucky. read more >>
 

With the recent release of the FY19 Track-2 solicitation, Researchers will be looking for team members. To help in finding collaborators, we have expanded our Research Expertise Profiles database from SC-only to nationwide and contacted all of the other jurisdictions. Make sure you are in the database and your information is correct!

News, Opportunities and Deadlines

SC INBRE has released two new solicitations: Developmental Research Project (DRP) Program ($50,000 for 12 months) and Bioinformatics Pilot Project (BIPP) Program ($10,000 for 12 months). The DRP Program is open to SC INBRE network and outreach institutions. The BIPP Program, in addition to open to SC INBRE network and outreach institutions, is also open to affiliate members of SC Clinical and Translational Research Institute (SCTR) and student/faculty teams from any SC PUI.
Ouachita Baptist University (AR) and Jacksonville State University (AL) announce the creation of the Cell Biology Education Consortium (CBEC). CBEC received 5 years of funding from the NSF as a Research Collaborative Network for Undergraduate Biology Education (RCN-UBE). The primary activity of CBEC will be the development of “Cell Blocks” – modules consisting of written and video protocols and classroom implementation strategies and assessments which will be developed by faculty and their students at small institutions, making it adaptable at similar schools. For more info and to apply for funding opportunities, visit their website. You do not have to be experienced in cell tissue culture to receive funding through the CBEC. 
Learn the aspects of writing a Small Business Innovation (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) grant. Two upcoming workshops:
NSF Computational and Date-Enabled Science and Engineering (CDS&E): Goal of CDS&E program is to identify and capitalize on opportunities for major scientific and engineering breakthroughs through new computational and data analysis approaches. Full Proposal due Oct 15 to Division of Materials Research.
